Thoughts About Pet Adoption

Our Siamese cat Barney was adopted from our local shelter, which has a 95 percent kill rate. Meaning 95 out of every 100 animals brought in will be euthanized. We brought Barney home only two days away from being "put down," and Barney is the most adorable, smart and affection cat you'll ever meet. He's friendly to everyone, taught both of our "free to good home" dogs to be his friends and playmates, loves to go on hikes, and most of all loves to be held and petted. I can't imagine our life without him.

If you want a pet, think about adopting an adult pet first, especially one from a shelter. Although the intention of animal shelters is to help unwanted pets get placed in homes, due to over-population, most shelters end up being a waiting place for animals to get euthanized (death row through no fault of their own), especially adult animals.

Beware of Unethical Rescue Groups

Unfortunately, not all rescue groups are created the same. On rare occasions a few unscrupulous groups take advantage of animal lovers. Before giving to a rescue center, please search the Consumer Rip Off Center listings.
